Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was allegedly attacked by armed assailants at the Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County. Gachagua, along with a group of unarmed leaders and civilians, became trapped inside the church as gunfire and tear gas were reported outside.
Vehicles were set ablaze in the vicinity, escalating tensions and fear among the congregants. Kalonzo Musyoka, a political ally of Gachagua, condemned the assault in a statement on social media.
He characterized the incident as a serious violation of the Constitution and the rule of law. Musyoka emphasized that a place of worship is sacred and highlighted the unlawfulness of using force against unarmed citizens.
He called for accountability from Kenya's Inspector General of Police regarding the safety of Gachagua and others inside the church. The incident raised alarms about political violence and the safety of public spaces in the country.
Musyoka's statement concluded with a call for Kenya to uphold its constitutional democracy, stressing that political rivalry does not justify acts of terror.
